Alvin (AL) Nurse
Born and raised in Sacramento County, California, and is the second child of Kermit and Marzetta Nurse.
Alvin is married to Carrie Wade-Nurse. They have six children and thirteen grandchildren. Alvin and Carrie were raised in California and now live in University Place, Washington. Serving Our Lord and Savior is paramount in their lives.
“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight.”
Alvin graduated from Grant Union High School, Del Paso Heights, CA. in 1965; following graduation, Alvin enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a Boatswain’s mate and was awarded the Nave Unit Commendation Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
After his military service, Alvin pursued higher; in 1974, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Washington and began a 33-year career in public education as a Junior high and high school teacher. Alvin went on to earn a master’s degree from City University in Educational Leadership and Principals Certification and entered the field of Public Schools Administration; Alvin retired from the education career in 2007.
In 1988, Alvin joined Allen African Methodist Episcopal Church, Tacoma, WA., and shortly thereafter joined Allen’s Adult Usher Board #2. He served as the Secretary, Vice-President, and President. While serving with Board #2, Alvin became actively involved with the State ushers and NUCUAA under Levites Robert B. Sherron, Arthedella Powell, Louise Johnson, and NUCUAA Young Adult President Anthony Powell.
Since his retirement, Alvin has focused his energy and time on serving God and giving back to his community. Along with a fraternity (Alpha Phi Alpha), Bother Alvin mentors 4th and 5th-grade boys at the local Boys and Girls Club, and in God’s House, he’s served as President of Allen’s
Senior Usher Board Ministry for nine years.
Community Service: Served as Vice Chair of the Washington State Black Policy Foundation, President of the Alpha Iota Mu Lambda Foundation, the Golden Futures Foundation Board of Directors, and Tacoma-Pierce County Dispute Resolution Board.
As a member of the United Christian Church Usher (UCCU) of Washington State, Alvin has served on the Board of Directors as third, second, and first vice president. He currently serves as the fiftieth President of the Washington State United Christian Church Ushers.
Alvin also serves as the Vice-Chair of the NUUAA Nomination Committee and the Chairman of the NUCUAA Western Region Board of Directors. I have found serving the Lord and fellowshipping with Levites across our region and nation a blessing and rewarding experience.
My Biggest Achievements: Being an Ambassador for God, I assist in youth's academic and social development to become strong contributing citizens.
My labor and rewards are reflected in God’s our Lords words. Matthew 25:23
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
