UNITED CHRISTIAN CHURCH USHERS OF WASHINGTON STATE
“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:10
The United Christian Church Ushers (UCCU) of Washington State, a testament to
the power of faith, was organized in 1948 under the name “Puget Sound United
Ushers." In a remarkable display of growth, by 1950, it had expanded to twelve
churches in the greater Seattle area, with Mr. Esmond Dahlberg serving as the
first President. The first School of Ushering began in 1952. The First instructors were Mrs.
Matilda Grant of Seattle and Mr. Robert Sherron of Tacoma. Today, the School
of Ushering is named after one of its founding instructors, Mr. Robert B.
Sherron. The youth Department was organized in 1959, and in 1963, under the tenure of
Mr. Robert B. Sherron, the following departments were organized: Alumni, Art
and Crafts, A.W. Briggs Health Unit, Education, Memorial, Social, Young Adult
Counselor, William H. Davis Honor Club, and Public Relations. Also, the United
Board became active in the National United Church Ushers Association of
America, Inc. and the Western Region Conference. In 1977, due to expansion outside the Puget Sound area, the organization found
it necessary to change the name of the organization from Puget Sound United
Ushers to United Christian Church Ushers of Washington State.
Our National Magazine, “The Doorkeeper,” was created by a
Washingtonian, Mrs. Helen Hornbuckle, which hundred receive every quarter.
The United Christian Church Ushers of Washington State has been blessed with
fourteen Presidents over the years, and we’re excited to announce our 15th
UCCU State President, Mr. Alvin (AL) Nurse, Allen AME Church Tacoma, WA.
God be the glory as we serve in this Usher Ministry in His house.
