“Mr. Usher” · A Legacy of Leadership and Excellence

A man of integrity, vision, and organization, George T. Grier served as Illinois’ first State President and helped advance the ministry of church ushering nationally. His enduring contributions include founding the School of Ushering, designing the National Pin, and writing the Ushers Universal Manual and Handbook.

Building a Foundation for Excellence

• 1948 — Demonstrating the ministry: With the Illinois Ushers, Brother Grier presented a demonstration of church ushering.
• 1951 — Establishing the School: He proposed a resolution to organize a National School and became its first Chairperson.
• 1952 — Celebrating the first graduates: Under his leadership, 210 graduates received diplomas at the first National Graduation.
• 1955 — Strengthening usher training: He organized the 7:00 a.m. Ushers’ Workshop, teaching a uniform, silent method of church ushering through signal codes.
• 1961 — Honoring his legacy: In Denver, Colorado, the School was named the George T. Grier School of Ushering in recognition of his contributions.

Fondly named “Mr. Usher” by President R. E. Harshaw, Brother Grier left a legacy of preparation, unity, and excellence in service.

Western Region / George T. Grier School of Ushering

We equip church ushers to serve with confidence, consistency, and care. Through the Silent Uniform Method of Ushering, described in the NUCUAA School of Ushering Manual, we promote a shared standard of service and help strengthen usher ministries in every state.

TRAINING FOR EVERY GENERATION
We provide training for senior, young adult, and junior ushers, as well as certified instructors, at the state level and during the National Convention.

LEARN, PRACTICE & PARTICIPATE
At the National Convention, two-hour morning workshops run Tuesday through Friday. The department also conducts:

• Tuesday: Floor Demonstration Competition
• Wednesday: Drill Competition
• Thursday: King and Queen Contest

CELEBRATING COMMITMENT & ACHIEVEMENT
Ushers who complete all four morning workshops earn workshop certificates, distributed through their state chairpersons.

Completing these workshops for three consecutive National Convention years fulfills the workshop requirement for the National Bachelor’s Degree.
