HISTORY

UCUA History

The United Church Ushers of Arizona (UCUA) was founded June 15, 1996 under the affiliation of the National United Church Ushers Association of America (NUCUAA), Inc., making Arizona the 4th state to join the Western Region. The key organizer and current state President, Julia Rodgers of South Phoenix Missionary Baptist Church, along with other Arizona ushers attended a 1995 NUCUAA convention in Las Vegas, Nevada as guests. After returning home from that convention, the Arizona contingency was so impressed by NUCUAA as an organization that the decision was made to become a NUCUAA member state.

April 1999 Arizona successfully hosted its first Western Region Conference. July 2021 UCUA along with the other Western Region states hosted the first virtual NUCUAA convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These events, showed that UCUA was and continues to be a valued contributor and active participant to the Western Region and to NUCUAA. Each year UCUA holds the George T. Grier School of Ushering January – April, sends delegates and/or hosts the Western Region Conference, sends delegates to the National Convention, holds offices at the Western Region and National levels, submits articles every quarter to NUCUAA’s Helen B. Hornbuckle Doorkeeper publication, and actively supports church family and community outreach efforts. UCUA held its first George T. Grier School of Ushering class January of 2001 and holds the “School” every year since then. As UCUA grew, so did its representation in the different NUCUAA departments and committees.

Several Senior, Young Adult, and Junior/Young People have held Western Region and National elected offices. President Rodgers served as the Western Region President from 2011 to 2015 and Jairus Nero served as the NUCUAA Junior/Young People President from 2012 to 2013. Also, in July 2002 Dareece Gibson represented the Western Region in the NUCUAA Education contest and captured a fourth place $1,500.00 scholarship.

UCUA’s major focus areas are education and drawing in the youth and young adults, recognition of longtime serving ushers, outreach efforts, and sharpening our ushering skills through the George T. Greer School of Church Ushering. UCUA continues with plans to expand its membership within and beyond the Phoenix Metropolitan area, petition to inactive church memberships to become and stay active, and keep current active church memberships involved, excited, and motivated. To God Be The Glory for all that He does!
